Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but they can happen from time to time. At our practice, we are here to help you manage any issues quickly and comfortably. Most orthodontic problems can be handled at home until you are able to visit our office.

What Is Considered an Orthodontic Emergency?

Orthodontic emergencies typically fall into two categories: discomfort from your appliances or damage to your braces or aligners.

True emergencies are rare, but if you are experiencing significant pain, swelling, or injury, please contact our office as soon as possible.

Common Orthodontic Issues and How to Handle Them

General Soreness

It is normal to feel some soreness after getting braces or after adjustments. This usually lasts a few days.

To relieve discomfort, you can:

  • Rinse with warm salt water
  • Eat soft foods
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed

Irritated Lips or Cheeks

Your mouth may need time to adjust to braces. If irritation occurs, orthodontic wax can be placed over brackets or wires to reduce friction.

Loose Brackets or Bands

If a bracket or band becomes loose but is still attached, leave it in place and contact our office to schedule a repair.

Loose or Poking Wire

If a wire is sticking out and causing irritation, try gently pushing it back with a clean pencil eraser. You can also cover the area with orthodontic wax to make it more comfortable.

Lost or Broken Aligners

If you lose or damage an aligner, contact our office right away. We will advise whether to move to the next set or replace the aligner.

When Should You Call Our Office?

You should contact us if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent pain
  • A broken appliance that is causing discomfort
  • Swelling or signs of infection
  • Trauma or injury to the teeth or jaw

Our team will guide you on what to do next and schedule an appointment if needed.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

Many issues can be avoided by following simple care guidelines:

  • Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports
  • Follow instructions for rubber bands and appliances
  • Maintain good oral hygiene

Taking these steps helps keep your treatment on track and reduces the risk of unexpected problems.
